Red-shouldered Hawks are one of eleven species of raptors that nest on Starr Ranch. This year we have several pairs of them nesting and some already have chicks. The chicks I want to show you and band, however, hatched a little bit earlier than the rest of the other active nests. They are approximately four weeks old and are ready to band.
This nest is one of several in our headquarters area and also found throughout Starr Ranch. It’s an easy walk along our access road. While we head to the nest I will talk about other aspects of Starr Ranch including how it is used by all the raptors that nest here. I’ll also have a Great-horned Owl (he is unreleasable due to an injured wing many years ago) that I can show everyone up close and I’ll talk about some of the characteristics that they and all raptors have that make them so good at what they do.
I guarantee that if you’ve never seen young hawks up close it will be an exciting and memorable experience you'll not soon forget. I hope you can join me. Pete
