Great Horned Owls are one of eleven species of raptors that
nest on Starr Ranch. This year we have several pairs of them nesting. One pair
with chicks was recently discovered, approximately four-and-a-half weeks old, and
are ready to band. Hence, the last minute notice. We also will have a rehabbed adult
Great Horned Owl at the event.
This nest is about 2/3 of a mile down
Bell Canyon and very close to the road. It’s an easy walk -- but for anyone who would like to ride there, we can provide that too. Before and while we head to
the nest I will talk about other aspects of Starr Ranch including how it is
used by all the raptors that nest here.
I guarantee that if you’ve never seen
young owls up close it will be an exciting and memorable experience. I
hope you can join me.
