Audubon Starr Ranch Barn Owl Banding, Sunday May 5, 2013 11:00 AM - 3:00 PM
Location: Audubon Starr Ranch -- Trabuco Canyon, California

3BarnOwlChicks

On Sunday, May 5, as long as things continue to progress well for the Barn Owl chicks we've been watching on the Starr Ranch Barn Owl cam I will band them.

Part of each session will include discussion of owl biology -- habits, habitats, etc. I'll likely have an adult male Great Horned Owl at Starr Ranch that's in "permanent rehab" (broken wing that never healed correctly) and I will include him in the discussion. He's a great bird who allows me to handle him while showing you interesting characteristics.

Each session will also take a short hike or truck ride to an area where we can view much of Starr Ranch and approximately 130,000 acres of southern California wildland. I'll talk about the natural history features of Starr Ranch with an emphasis on raptor habitat.

Lunch will be provided -- sandwiches, veggies, chips, drinks. We'll all eat lunch together at noon and from 1:00 to 2:00 PM we'll band the chicks.

I think you will find that learning about these birds in person is a unique and thrilling experience that few people ever get to have. Starr Ranch is part of Audubon California. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we rely on the generosity of our supporters in order to operate the cams and achieve our greater conservation mission. At Starr Ranch, that means delivering top notch education programs for people of all ages and carrying out an ambitious habitat restoration program that preserves Southern California’s native wildlife and landscapes.

Your participation fee for this event will help us keep the cams going and Starr Ranch’s great programs available to friends and neighbors like you. The owl banding session is a rare opportunity for you to get up close and personal with the birds you have been watching online. I’m confident that it will be an unforgettable day.

Thanks,
Pete
